One Day Til Africa

Nate and I are officially homeless. We turned in our apt keys yesterday and have no place in our name. So, we've moved in with his parents in the beautiful Terre Haute, IN. I woke up this morning and thought, "We are going to Africa tomorrow." That's it. No real emotion about it. It has not hit me yet...I just know that I'm going. I know that I need to 1) finish packing, 2) get a rain jacket, and 3) enjoy a steak dinner tonight.

1) Finish packing - We bought huge backpacks and mine is full to the brim...just of clothes. In the words of our dear friend Angela Lee (who spent two years in the Peace Corps in Niger), "Remember to relax. If you landed in Tanzania with just your malaria meds, your passport, and some money, you'd probably be fine." So, I need to downsize and simplify.

2) Get a rain jacket - Yes, we are leaving Indiana just as the awfully cold and icy winter is ending and going to Tanzania during it's "winter." Really, their winter is really just the rainy season. We checked the weather for Arusha today and it looks like the next week will be highs of upper 80s and lows in the 60s. Nate says that rainy season just means it rains some almost everyday versus the rest of the year when they get very little rain. He assures me there will not be a monsoon.

3) Enjoy a steak dinner - We will not be having steak in Tanzania. On special occasions, we might get goat. I'm looking forward to being creative with vegetables, fruit, rice, and beans.

Please keep up with us while we're gone. I'll post some prayer requests and our travel plans soon.

  1. It really is true . . . 5 of us once went by matatu to Uganda (for two weeks) with only a spare outfit each and a communal bottle of shampoo (and sleeping mats, I think). Very, very crazy, but fun. Praying for a peaceful flight over.

  2. After spending a year in a warm country with a rainy season, I would recommend a good, big umbrella over a rain jacket. the rain jacket just makes you sweat on the inside when it's hot out. Have a fun trip.
