Well, I have been neglectful of the blog. So this one is really long but I broke it up with lots of pictures and bold points of thankfulness. I am also using my phone to post for the first time so my apologies if it looks terrible.
Our latest trip to NY occurred a week and a half ago. Fortunately, we got the week of Thanksgiving off which was a wonderful respite from our travels.
I am thankful for a week off from our travels to be at home and rest.
Elijah and I had the great pleasure of traveling with our dear friend Sandy from church. Nate and I got to know her on our trip to Haiti last Dec so I knew it would so fun traveling with her.
We had a pretty easy drive to Chicago and flight to NY. We used uber to get a ride from LaGuardia to the clinic. If you havent used it yet, I highly recommend uber to get non-yellow-taxi rides at a cheap price (especially if you use uber x). It's easy to use the app and you can pay through the phone so no biggie if you forget cash like I often do.
Elijah in true fashion was a little upset before his appointment. It's usually time for him to eat when we get there but we don't feed him a full bottle because he needs to eat after the NAM adjustments to show the doctors that he is comfortable. Here is Elijah with Sandy prior to the appointment.
I was looking forward to a quick adjustment and then lunch at Ellen's Stardust Diner per Sandy's recommendation. (Disclaimer: Sandy recommends it for the experience of hopeful future broadway stars singing and dancing in the restaurant and not for the food.) However, once Dr. Olsen and Dr. Grayson started checking out Elijah, they decided to make some extra adjustments. He had two pretty bad sores on his premaxilla (the part of his gum line that sticks out). I had actually taken him to Riley two days prior to see Dr. Flores (our plastic surgeon) upon the recommendation of the NYU staff when I sent pics of Elijah's sores (one of which pictured below).
Dr. Flores trained with Dr. Grayson and the IRPS team and so they know each other well.
I am thankful for doctors at two centers separated by many states that communicate well for the good of their patient.
Dr. Flores examined him but said there weren't any rough spots for him to sand down, so he instructed us to put bacitracin on the sores until our trip to NY two days later. It definitely helped but didn't completely clear them up. So, back to our NY trip. They ended up working on adjustments for a long time. I had another chance to redeem my terrible sell to Dr. Olson about indianapolis by having Sandy talk to him about how great the city is. She did a great job.
I am thankful for all the wonderful staff and doctors at IRPS. They really care for their patients and families and make us feel like we are in really good hands.
I am thankful for the foundation providing a way for us to get NAM for Elijah from the center that invented it.
By the time we finished, it was too late to explore so we went straight to the airport. Our flight was delayed again, but we enjoyed a nice lunch there.
Then off we headed back to Chicago. The flight was fine (the wait on the runway in LaGuardia was only 35 min compared to an hour like the previous trip). Our drive back to Indy went well and we even made it back before midnight!
I am thankful for Sandy and all the other friends and family accompanying us on these trips. It would be so hard to travel without you.
Now to Thanksgiving weekend. I realize I should do two separate posts but oh well. Here are some pics from Elijah's first trip to Grandpa and Grandma Evans' house in Terre Haute for Thanksgiving.
Great-great Aunt Maryanne
I am thankful for mine and Nate's amazing families who have sacrificed so much for us and who love Elijah so dearly.
I am thankful for my new little family and the journey it took to get us together.
I am thankful for a wonderful husband who is a terrific father.
I am thankful for Elijah who is teaching me what the love of our Heavenly Father is like for his dear children.
I am thankful for Elijah's birth mother and her deep, self-sacrificing love with which she loved Elijah - a love which points us to the self-sacrificing love of Christ.
I am thankful for Elijah's cleft.
I am thankful for the pain and sweat of parenthood.
I am thankful for God's perfect timing. I am thankful for the dark times of waiting that allowed us so much more sweetly to see God's providing hand and his deep care for us.
Psalm 107:28-31
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!
